Schiedam (Netherlands) Gas Token
These tokens were used in the Netherlands to buy town gas. Apparently, you went and bought a supply of tokens, which you'd insert into the meter in your house at regular intervals to keep the gas flowing. Meter readers would come by regularly and empty the tokens.

The token has been deliberately notched, to prevent confusion with normal coins. The notch helped the token fit precisely into the token slot on the meter; a regular circulation coin could not be forced into the meter unless it too was notched.
