Issued for use in the Italian colony of Eritrea, Africa - a place where the Maria Theresa thaler saw widespread circulation. The obverse and reverse design of these coins was deliberately similar to the thalers. The portrait is of "Italia", rather than the distinctly un-Maria-like King Victor Emannuel III normally found on Italian coins.
