England groat of Edward III, obverse
The Obverse of this early groat is mostly taken up by the king's portrait, shown in more detail (but not necessarily more true-to-life) than on the smaller penny.

At 8 o'clock can be seen the king's claim to the throne of France; this claim was dropped from the coin by treaty in 1361, but re-instated when the treaty collapsed in 1369.
