Mysore 1 paisa 1787 |
This is part of my "unusual calendars and dating systems" collection. In the 18th century, the Indian state of Mysore was almost unique in using the "anno Mohammed" calendar, as opposed to the "anno Hejira" calendar in use in most Muslim lands. The year on this coin is AM 1217, which translates to 1787 AD.
Mysore is also distinguished from other Indian States coinage because animals are commonly featured on them. The animal depicted on this one is an elephant.
